Apprenticeships and Traineeships

Apprenticeships and traineeships combine training with working in a real job, for a real boss, with a real wage. Apprentices and trainees complete a nationally recognised qualification while learning valuable skills at work and under the guidance of a training organisation. Upon completion, you may find yourself in a great place to keep working, go on to future study or even start your own business.

Quick facts about apprenticeships and traineeships

  • Apprenticeships and traineeships combine work with structured training.
  • Apprenticeships and traineeships can be full-time, part-time, or school-based – where some of the training is undertaken while the apprentice or trainee is in high school.
  • Existing employees may undertake an apprenticeship or traineeship (depending on the qualification).
  • Apprenticeships and traineeships require employers to enter into a training contract with the apprentice or trainee.
  • Employers work with a training organisation and the apprentice or trainee to draw up a training plan.
  • Training options must be negotiated and outlined in the training plan. Aspects of training that are open to negotiation (subject to training package requirements) include: selection, content and sequencing or competency units, timing, location and mode of delivery, and the trainer or facilitator. User Choice

User Choice is a national policy whereby State and Territory Governments fund RTOs to provide structured training to Australian Apprentices. These funds reduce the cost of the training that an Australian Apprentice or the employer will have to pay under an Australian Apprenticeship.

The amount of funding and training available under User Choice is different in each State and Territory, with each State and Territory having different priority areas to direct their User Choice funds.

Under User Choice arrangements, Australian Apprentices and their employers may be able to select the private or public training provider of their choice.

Smart City Vocational College has current contracts to deliver subsidised training to apprentices and trainees in Queensland and the ACT.

Students will be required to pay contribution fees (concessions and exemptions may apply to eligible students).  Any possible Employer Gap payment will be discussed at enrolment.
